Some Like It Hot

I just got back from "beach day" at my childrens' school.  The annual tradition had to be adjusted slightly to allow for the sweltering temperatures by moving some of the water-free activities indoors.  Surprisingly, when the teacher gave parent volunteers the opportunity to choose their "station," not one person ran for the air-conditioned areas.  Except for me!  My excuse, of course, is asthma.  According to weatherman Glenn "Hurricane" Schwartz, the combination of 98 degree temperatures plus humidity are not to be taken lightly if you are someone with sensitivity to air quality levels, which would be me.

Despite my being stationed indoors, I can still feel my body temperature is elevated from being outside for just the last ten minutes doing clean-up.  Waiting for my tea to brew so I can ice it for some cool relief, I thought I would pause and reflect on the fact that this weather is something I had better get used to.  Although, from what I've been told, it will actually be more moderate in SW Florida. Sure it could be in the low 90s every day for several months in the summer, but possibly it won't get this hot, and then alternate with cooler but wetter weather as we are supposed to get.

As for the medical report, my doctor said yesterday that I do NOT have a sinus infection.  I am "more open" than I have been in "months"-- yay!  I want to believe him about the infection, but based on what was clogging me up this morning, I am not sure I do.  I did a rinse and took Zyrtec, and will add some Sudafed at bedtime tonight per his instructions.  He feels that the recent fluctuating temps high humidity are a bad combination for me.  Something about the moist air opening things up to all the pollen that then gets trapped in the heat.  I wish I could follow it all better, but I just make sure I remember what he says to actually DO about it.  Later I'll research more to try to understand the science behind it.  Or I could just wait until one (or more) of my children takes that class in pre-med or med school.

Oh, yes.  There just might be a doctor in the family someday.  Yesterday evening Jon & I were discussing the need to celebrate my final trip to the Ear, Nose & Throat doctor, otherwise known as the"otorhinolaryngology" specialist.  Since Jon couldn't pronounce it right, I had him repeating and repeating, which turned into a hilarious song-like melody, which of course led the kids to join in with gusto.  Luke, in particular, seemed to enjoy his own rock-out version of "otorhinolaryngology"-- soon to be released on YouTube!

By the end of the singing, two of the three kids could pronounce it, and they all understood what it meant: the boogie doctor.  At bedtime, Luke came out of his room after being tucked in saying he was super-stuffy and needed his saline spray.  It worked like a charm, as usual.  Out came the biggest crusty thing ever-- no wonder the boy couldn't breathe!  At that, Jon exclaimed, "Dude, you ARE the perfect candidate for otorhinolaryngology someday!"  Luke just agreed.

I have to say, I hope I never need to see another otorhinolaryngologist.  But if I do, I'd rather it be one of my own children.  How cool would that be?
